More Blooms, Brighter Colors...One thing that everyone wants when they put their plants out in the garden is a great show of color. That's what it's all about. What can I do to maximize the number of flower buds the plant sets, increase the size of the buds themselves and finally make sure that the colors they show are the brightest possible? In order to make that happen you have to make sure there are no stress factors, which will limit all the potential growth of your plants. Nutrient stress is one of the factors you can control with the plant food you will give your plants. The question is,
"What makes a good Blossom Booster Fertilizer Product?"
"Its not just a high middle number that makes the plant bloom"
There are many fertilizer products on the market today with high phosphorus numbers (that's the middle number e.g. 10-50-10 or 10-60-10) that claim to increase the amount of bloom that your plants will produce. Some of them claim to be super bloomers and the like. You can actually apply too much phosphorus, which is capable of tying up the trace nutrients in the soil. This can make it more difficult for your plants to take up these vital nutrients and flourish.
"It's the correct N-P-K ratio that makes the difference"

The nitrogen content (which is the first number) should be no higher than 10. The Phosphorus content (which is the second number should be roughly 3 times higher. Anything higher than that is unnecessary. There is plenty available at that level for all blooming plants.
Here is the real secret.
The last number, which is Potash (or Potassium) should be at least twice as high as the Nitrogen (the first number). Potassium is the catalyst that helps all the other nutrients do their job. Potassium also puts a brake on the vegetative growth (hardening off) and helps the plant mature and set buds. At this point, provided enough phosphorus, secondary and trace elements are available, the plant will produce buds that will fully mature and produce vibrant, beautiful blooms and colors.
